A free card deck generator is a tool that turns a list of cards into a real, playable deck: you type the cards or import them from a spreadsheet, and out comes a deck you can shuffle, draw from, and deal. The Deck Builder web app does exactly that, free and entirely in your browser, with no install and no account needed to start.
Here are the three ways to generate a deck, from fastest to most hands-on.
1. Import a deck from a CSV file
The fastest way to generate a deck is to import one that already exists as a list. If your cards are in a spreadsheet (or you can paste them into one), save it as CSV and import it:
- Open app.deckbuilderapp.app and create a deck.
- Open the deck and choose Import.
- Pick your CSV file. The importer reads the header row and maps each column to a card field (name, description, quantity, image URL) automatically, and tells you which headers it could not place.
- Review, confirm, and the deck fills with your cards, quantity expansion included: a row with quantity 4 becomes four cards.
A JSON import works the same way. The full column names, aliases, and examples are in the CSV and JSON import guide.
2. Type the cards by hand
For a small deck, typing is genuinely fine. Create a deck, use Add card, and fill in name, description, and an optional image URL. Cards persist in your browser, so you can build a deck over several sittings and it is still there, complete, when you come back.
A few things worth knowing while you type:
- Quantity saves typing. Set a card’s quantity to add several copies at once, so a 54-card poker deck is 54 rows, not 54 dialogs.
- Card art comes from a URL. Point a card at any image on the web and it renders in the grid. Cards without an image get a clean placeholder.
- The free tier is three local decks. That mirrors the Android app’s free tier; Pro lifts the cap, and it is the same entitlement on web and Android.
3. Design the cards themselves in the Card Designer
When your deck needs cards that do not exist yet, the Card Designer generates them: pick a layout preset, set a background, choose fonts and borders, and the app renders each card as a finished image. It is the difference between generating a list of cards and generating actual, printable card faces. You can open the Card Designer directly with nothing installed: the link creates a deck for your designed cards on first use. The custom deck builder guide walks through designing a deck from scratch, and preset backgrounds for the Card Designer shows the ready-made looks.
What the generated deck can do
A generated deck is not a static list. It behaves like a real deck of cards:
- Shuffle with a fair, truly random algorithm (why that matters).
- Draw from the top, deal to hands, and work through the deck to an empty pile.
- Flip, tap, and turn cards, with a discard pile and in-play zone.
- Export the deck as a file and import it on another device, or print it: the deck you generate online can become print-ready cards.
If you are designing a game rather than digitizing one, the browser is where you want to be: build a deck in your browser covers the full at-a-desk workflow, and making your own card game covers the design side. Android covers everything above on your phone, including camera scanning for physical cards.
Generate your first deck
Open app.deckbuilderapp.app, create a deck, and import, type, or design your way to a shuffled deck in the next five minutes. If something feels clumsy, say so in the Discord: the browser version is built out one piece at a time, and that feedback picks the next piece.
